Works of Ulama in North Sumatra: Between Donations, Communications, and Martabat of Jawi

Abstract
Since the spread of Islam in North Sumatra; then, formal religious education has flourished. Formal education of religion commonly known as Madrasah or Islamic Boarding School gave emergence of great scholars like big ulama. Ulamas who were born from Islamic Boarding School in North Sumatera, usually have activities like teaching and preaching. At the same time, they also write, whether it is books, pamphlets, and so on. Their books are usually written in Jawi and some written in Rumi. This study aims to collect the works of the Ulamas in North Sumatra specifically written in Jawi, identify, and translate them into Rumi writing, preserve and publish them. Among the books found were book by Sheikh Abdul Halim Khatib Lubis entitled: Kasyful Gummah, Bayanus Syafi and Syaifuth Tholabah. All of them are written in Jawi. This study is a preliminary study that focuses on the collection, identification, rescue, transliterate to Rumi and publish those books.
