An Analytic Hierarchy Process for English Learning Strategies of College Students in Taiwan

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the importance weights of English learning strategies that Taiwanese
college students possess as well as to clarify the differences of their weight order between genders and among
three proficiency groups. This study adopted an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to design the research
framework, and English learning strategies were divided into 2 criteria, 6 sub-criteria and 18 indicators as the
AHP structure for the research instrument. An AHP questionnaire was administered to 405 university students in
Taipei, Taiwan. The results showed that, expect Attitudes in the sub-competence of the intercultural competence,
they held a very different view on the importance of almost all of the criteria and sub-criteria.
